Welcome to the

Peninsula Shopping Center

Discussion Forum!

The purpose of this website is to provide a focal point for information and ideas regarding the future of the Peninsula Shopping Center.  We hope you will refer to this site for updates and share your ideas, thoughts, and concerns with the center’s owners.

Background

The Peninsula Shopping Center was constructed in the 1950’s at a time when downtown Gig Harbor was the center of gravity for both the residential and business communities.  For decades PSC provided grocery, hardware, banking, and a host of other services for a growing Gig Harbor.

Today, the center is aging.  Its design and function no longer match the conditions in downtown or greater Gig Harbor.  Said differently, if the property was developed from scratch today it would not resemble the current Peninsula Shopping Center.

Join the Discussion

Today, the center’s owners and Olympic Property Group (OPG) have joined forces to explore ideas about its future.   The 6 acre Peninsula Shopping Center is the largest contiguous property in downtown Gig Harbor.  As such the property has an outsized potential to affect the community: positively or negatively.   Even leaving the property unchanged has significant implications for the community.

The owners and OPG desire to be as inclusive as possible in the exploration process.  OPG will be conducting a series of public workshops to stimulate ideas and vet concerns regarding the future of the Peninsula Shopping Center.  Please turn to this site for news, upcoming events, and share your thoughts with us.

We are looking forward to a lively discussion with the community about potential ideas for the Peninsula Shopping Center.

  • What are the pros/cons of leaving the site in its current configuration?

  • Are there civic uses that should be considered (parking facility, community gathering space) and if so, how can these uses be funded?

  • Should residential uses be introduced to the site?

We appreciated the great coverage by KIRO 7 regarding the old Peninsula Shopping Center! We would like to take an opportunity to correct a couple of items:
1. The plans that have been presented at the community outreach meetings are for 115 apartments, not 144.
2. Olympic Property Group is not proposing a "mini Pike's Place Market". That was an idea from a member of the community.

We did reach out to KIRO 7 this morning to make the corrections and appreciate them taking time to cover the story. Thank you!

To all who attended our community meetings concerning the old QFC center on April 27th and last night May 3rd– thank you.  We were humbled by the level of engagement and discussion.  We were also encouraged, especially by last night’s discussion to spend some time thinking bigger.  The Inn at Gig Harbor has been great to work with and we would like to thank them as well.

We just added the video of the April 27th, 2016 Public Meeting. Remember, all the materials and videos will be posted on the Resources page in about a week’s time. Stay tuned for our next meetings.

Sincerely,

Olympic Property Group

A public meeting was held last night on April 27th, 2016 at the Inn at Gig Harbor regarding the Peninsula Shopping Center. There were over 60 people who showed up and contributed to the meeting with ideas and concerns! We will be posting comments gathered at the latest meeting on the

Ideas Heard page of this website as they become available. We will also be posting a video of the meeting and new documents on the Resources page of this website as it becomes available.

If you missed out on this meeting, don't worry! We have another meeting scheduled for May 3rd, 2016 at 6:00pm at the Inn at Gig Harbor. We will be sharing the plans we have explored so far and the "redevelopment" process. We invite you to share your observations about presented plans and any issues or concerns you may have. We want to share ideas, thoughts, and concerns about how to give the center – and downtown Gig Harbor – the brightest future possible.

Thank you,

Olympic Property Group

Last April, the Owners of Peninsula Shopping Center and Olympic Property Group invited the community to discuss the redevelopment of the center and to gather feedback. After working behind the scenes for many months we would like to share with the community the results of our analysis and suggestions for the future.

Please join us on April 27 or May 3 at the Inn at Gig Harbor at 6:00pm where we will share the plans we have explored so far and the "redevelopment" process. We invite you to share your observations about presented plans and any issues or concerns you may have.

We want to share ideas, thoughts, and concerns about how to give the center – and downtown
Gig Harbor – the brightest future possible.

THANK YOU

We have held a total of 6 meetings with the tenants, neighbors, public, Rotary Club, and the Downtown Waterfront Alliance and received a generous level of input and ideas.

We will now assess everything we have heard, perform some research, and with some luck get back to the community with next steps by the end of the summer.

Please contact us in the interim if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas.

Have a safe and happy summer.
